Freedom Ryder Superbike: a philosophy of performance

All handcycles are not alike. FREEDOM RYDER builds the finest handcycles in the world. If you do your research you will find out why this is true. First of all FREEDOM RYDER frame design is completely different. Most other handcycles use a bicycle type headset & front fork steering method. This design, along with most other designs, does not allow for leaning your body into a turn and can put your legs into a bind while turning. This is the most important design requirement of a handcycle. With FREEDOM RYDER'S patented "center articulated body lean steering" design you counteract centrifugal force, achieve maximum cornering performance and avoid tipping over. You merely lean your body to initiate a turn. This method is fluid and natural, and feels much like snow skiing or water skiing. FREEDOM RYDER handcycles also have self-centering steering geometry so steady state cruising is effortless.

Weight distribution is the second most important design factor, but one often overlooked. This becomes apparent the first time you attempt to climb a steep hill. Dirty pavement, gravel or dirt roads further compound this problem. The Vietnam Challenge riders spent much of their journey on hilly roads. That's why they picked Freedom Ryders (Superbikes), the handcycles with the best forward weight bias for maximum traction.

Seating position is also extremely important. After studying handcycling, physiologists agree that the optimum position for handcycling is to have your shoulders and preferably your heart above the axis of the cranks. A reclined, passive seating position does present a slightly smaller frontal area but freedom of movement and pedaling efficiently suffer greatly. Also, the rearward shift in weight distribution greatly reduces front wheel traction. An upright, neutral body position similar to one used when snow-skiing keeps your body centered over your handcycle for maximum balance, control and maneuverability.

Superbike handcycle

Another important requirement of today's active individual is the ability to "take it with you." The Superbike Freedom Ryder uses extremely light top quality parts and components. The result is an extremely light weight bike. The footrests and rear wheels are easily removed with the supplied allen wrench. This design allows the Superbike handcycle to become a very light package that will easily fit into a station wagon, and is reassembled and ready to ride in a matter of minutes.

The Superbike aluminum footrest design allows for easy adjustment to fit your particular leg length. The crank height is adjustable too. It will fit your arm length and your upper body size, so that you can deliver maximum power. The triangle shaped backrest adjusts in height to give you the support you need when you push and free your shoulders and upper arms when you pull. Because of Superbike's unique adjustable frame designs, there is only one frame size for each model.

As with anything else it's the details that make the difference. That's why the Superbike handcycles use many hand crafted CNC milled aluminum parts. We make our own custom aluminum sprocket guard, aluminum axle clamps, aluminum leg supports and aluminum T-handle that has its spindle drilled offset so the delron handle always hangs down in the correct position. We then install sealed cartridge bearings and chrome plate the spindles for a finished product that will last the life of the Superbike handcycle. Owners often report their handcycles have 3-7 thousand miles on them and even some up to 15 thousand miles!

Check out all the details that make up a handcycle and you will find that "body lean steering" is where it's at! You will see why your guarantee of quality, performance and durability is in the name FREEDOM RYDER, for years of enjoyment and pride of ownership.

More about the Freedom Ryder Superbike design

The Superbike handcycle uses a patented design called center articulating, body leaning steering. This design has a two piece frame which articulates to execute a turn. The front wheel assembly and bucket seat are one unit which rotates about an axis utilizing two pivot points, one behind your back and one below the seat, which join it to the rear frame. When you lean into a corner, you not only cause the front wheel and frame assembly to tilt and turn, you also counteract centrifugal force during the turn. The more you lean, the more you turn. This is the safest, most efficient way to execute a corner. We then designed the steering geometry to cause the Superbike handcycle to self-center as you relax and come out of the turn.

Another benefit of the single unit front frame design is that it permits constant delivery of power throughout the turn because the crank assembly always stays in perfect alignment with your body.
Equally important for the serious rider, the Superbike handcycle has an optimum weight distribution of 60% front 40% rear. This gives you maximum traction on any surface to climb any hill.
Our handcycles are easy to ride and even after years of riding, top athletes tell us they still haven't reached the full potential of the machine.

After 12 years of development, the Freedom Ryder handcycle and the Superbike handcycle have become the state of the art machine in the sport of handcycling and the holder of many world records. Developed for the competitive athlete as well as the active individual, the Superbike has become the handcycle of choice by many top athletes. We strive to constantly incorporate the feedback from these riders into the design to stay on the leading edge of performance. The Superbike handcycle not only excels in competition, it provides exciting recreation and will take you places and distances you never thought possible. The FREEDOM RYDER's patented design balances the many complex variables of gravity, centrifugal force, self-centering geometry and weight distribution to give you the optimum level of performance.

FREEDOM RYDER spares no expense when it comes to using only the finest components and materials. When you own a Superbike handcycle, you don't just own a handcycle - you own the best.

WARNING: You may be injured while handcycling. The performance of specialized handcycles may expose the user to injury from impact with the ground, pavement or any obstructions including, but not limited to, trees, other cyclists, automobiles, pedestrians or any objects that may be encountered during the use of the handcycle.
The risk of injury is even greater unless you always: 1. Wear a helmet, 2. Wear gloves, 3. Wear protective clothing, 4. Make sure the handcycle is properly adjusted for your size and weight. If you have any question about adjustment, call or e-mail us.
Be careful and have fun !

Superbike handcycle

Craig Blanchette and Greg Hockensmith, from Team Freedom Ryder, are known as top handcyclists in the US. The experience of such great athletes is used by Brike Intl to constantly improve their handcycles.

The following is reproduced, with permission, from USHF (United States Handcycling Federation) website:

Blanchette Dominates Twilight Criterium (Athens, GA) © USHF

Bike racing in America centers around criteriums. The crowds are big, the sponsors are big, and the excitement is raw. Speed, power, and guts are king. The criterium racer is American all the way: Strong, confident (even a little cocky), and willing to take risks. The quintessential crit is the Athens Twilight. The quintessential crit racer is Craig Blanchette.

Craig

... The huge team assembled by Invacare’s Chris Peterson seemed a bit shell-shocked and was slow to respond. Meanwhile, Blanchette pushed the pace and was ahead by more than 30 seconds after only 3 laps. When asked about the crowd and the energy that surrounds the Twilight, Craig grinned: "Yeah....I guess 35,000 screaming people kind of helped too!"

Blanchette managed to gain time on every lap and eventually won by more than 75 seconds, which amounts to about ¾ of a lap. He lapped the entire field with the exception of the top 5 guys, and as he went down the finishing straight with 2 laps to go, he weaved his bike in S turns” and pointed at the announcer as if to say: "I have arrived." On the final turn, Blanchette triumphantly pumped his [huge] arms in the air and was beaming as the crowd roared and rang cowbells in celebration of his victory. After the race, he hopped out of his bike, gave a quick phone call to his sponsors, surveyed the chaotic scene of reporters and racing fans around him and said "I love bike racing."

Superbike's performances are outstanding because of the unique design:

The ultra-leight weight makes climbing hills easier, the weight repartition prevents the front driving wheel from skidding, body lean steering counteracts the centrifugal force, remaining perfectly aligned on the crank allows for pedalling in turns, steering with your body allows you to take your hands of the pedals to relax while riding downhill.
